    Snow and ice.
It will be Mid May so the snow should be mostly gone if not all gone.
  • How about I82 to Richland, and WA124 to US12 (by passing Walla Walla)?
  • Have driven both routes and prefer the US 12 route to Lewiston, you get to see some of the Snake River and the barges and watefowl along it. Lewiston Hill isn't so bad anymore compared to the old days (pre 1980's) but it's still to be reckoned with, especially if you don't like long downhill grades.
  • There is an old grade alternative to the Lewiston US95 hill. The average grade may actually be less than the modern one, but the curves are tighter and more frequent. Old cars had poor power to weight ratios. Same goes for the White Bird grade further south on US95.

There is a summit on US12 east of Pomeroy, Alpowa Summit, with a WSDOT camera. But grade from there down to the Snake is mild. 12 in this area follows the return route of Lewis & Clark.

Lewiston is the lowest point in Idaho, with barge access to the ocean (via a series of locks on the Columbia and Snake). Any route in/out will have some sort of grade.
  • I've also got to add a resounding "ditto" to the Lewiston hill on US 95.

Lewiston looks like a toy city from atop the hill. It is a very steep, long drop to the bottom.

We have also driven the 261 to US 12 route and come in to Lewiston from the west on US 12. Simple and no hills anything close to that found on US 95.
  • A variation on taking WA26 all the way to 195, is to cross over to US12 and take that into Lewiston. I've crossed from 26 on 260 and 261. 261 has to drop down to the Snake River level, but I don't regard it as steep. It also passes a turn off to Palouse Falls, though that might not be suitable for your RV.

We also like Hwy 26 versus I-90. Hwy 26 is 2 lane most of the way but 55 no problem and more interesting to us. Lewiston grade lets you appreciate the job your brakes do. Fuel prices are sort of strange. We fill up again in Ellensburg in order to make all the way to Lewiston and by-pass Colfax and towns on Hwy 26. Nice places to stay in Lewiston. (Colfax keep a very close eye on your speed)
  • When are you traveling?
Currently there isn't much. Lots of Canadian Geese in the fields.
Some farmers are actually doing some outside work.
You will not be along the orchards where they are cleaning and trimming trees.
Watch the down grade on I-90 from Rye Grass rest area down to WA 26 exist.
Watch the down grade on US 195 just before Lewiston. This one can sneak up on some. Watch and follow signs for proper speed.
