auxillary fuel tank

We are planning a trip up the Alcan hwy this summer and i recently was told i may have trouble crossing the border with my 100 gallon aux fuel tank entering Canada. does anyone have any information on this. i have a 2005 Dodge with a CM bed and i have mounted a fuel tank on it to extend out range when crossing the country or in this case countrys. would appreciate any feedback.
  • (late to the game),
But they are more concerned with people reselling gas/diesel. If It's a slip tank, you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

A friend of mine drove back from Oregon with 8 barrels of race fuel on a flat deck trailer. Just had to pay the taxes, and display the right placard..
  • Aux tanks are just not a problem. An older tank that had new welding on it might make them wonder if fuel was all that was being carried inside the tank. LOL. Many RV.net forum members have aux tanks and none that I remember have ever mentioned a problem at the border, on either side. If they don't ask, don't volunteer any comments about the tank.
  • Never heard of a problem before with an auxiliary tank, and as far as 5 gal cans I have traveled with 1 for my generator and 1 with diesel and never had any problems at the border. They do frown on 5 gallon cans in the back of a truck making short trips across the border (bringing back excess fuel) but I don't think a well equipped camper with a couple cans would ever be bothered?
  • I went 2 yrs ago with a 100 gal L-shaped tank and was never even asked about it.
  • Never have a problem cross back and forth from Canada to USA and buy and fill my 70 gallon tank with diesel fuel in the USA and bring it back, never have been asked period.
  • I've got one in the bed of my truck and never had a problem. You can't have loose fuel cans. They have asked and I have said just my auxiliary tank. They have specifically asked about loose cans. Living in a border town I go over get a few groceries and fill both tanks at the bridge. Price is much lower because it doesn't have road tax, export only.
