AZ highway route choice?

The object is to get to the Sedona area from I-10 in Phoenix. One set of driving directions says to take AZ 101 off I-10, then catch I-17; the other says to take I-10 to I-17.

I can't find a reason for the discrepancy; is one route less trafficked, shorter, easier access, better road surface, whatever?

Thanks for any information!

  • If you are west of the 101 (which goes north to Glendale and Peoria) then get on it. Exit the 101 at 17 North. I10 to 17 is an easy drive as well but could have much more traffic.
  • I would be heading *east* on I-10.

I gave identical criteria, i.e., eastbound on I-10, to the two programs that came up with the two different sets of driving directions, so it wasn't a matter of 'take whichever route you come to first.' I just thought there might be a specific reason why one route would be recommended over the other. IOW, maybe one of the mapping programs has more current highway data?

Loop 101 is a multi-laned high speed loop around the PHOENIX to the north. Coming in on !10 from the West I would definitely take LOOP 101 and connect to I17 in North Phoenix.

Coming into Phoenix from I10 from Tucson I would follow I10 to I17 then head North using I17 to Sedona...

Most major street/avenue roads in the Phoenix are multilaned and high speed. Most of the Phoenix roads are layed East/West and North/South which really plays heck on you at Sundown. Going west bound there is little escape with direct sun in your eyes at Sundown. Great time for pulling off if you can for a 30-min happy hour haha...

Enjoy your stay in the Sedona area and take in all of the RED ROCK views. Blows us away everytime we visit... We need to re-visit the SEDONA area as it has been several years now for us...
