Choice route

In August we are planning a trip from California to Missouri and have a choice of two routes Interstate 80 or Interstate 40. I have been both routes and each has their advantages and disadvantages. 80 can be very desolate for miles but the weather is cooler. Roads can be rough on both routes. Also thinking about fuel available, will be driving a 40 gasser this time rather than the 39 ft. diesel I've used the past 16 years. Advantage with the diesel if I couldn't find a Flying J just pull into the diesel pumps with the big boys.
  • We also enjoy the "Loneliest road in America"-- U.S. 50 across NV and part of UT.

But it would really depend on WHERE in CA you are starting. CA is a LONG state and route from San Diego would be quite different than from Crescent City.
  • I always choose to go the road less traveled as possible. I get white knuckles in some traffic. : )
  • About three years ago they resurfaced 40 from Barstow to Needles. Used to be really bad but nice now.

Don't know about 40 From Needles to Missouri as I haven't hit that section for about 10 years.
