Badlands to Game Lodge in Custer State Park

Hello,

In just a few weeks, we are travelling from the Badlands to Game Lodge in Custer State park.
We are pulling a 35 foot travel trailer and we are very unfamiliar with the area.
What is the suggested best route to get to the campground with ease and not get stuck on the needles highway?

Thank you.

  • If you are staying near Scenic, you could take Highway 44 to Rapid City, then take a left onto 79 S, then to 36, south of Hermosa. It will have less traffic, and is a more scenic road, but I90 isn't bad. Make sure you take 36 and not 40. Both are just south of Hermosa.

Take I-80 to 16 BYP to SD 79 and then head west on SD 36 just below Hermosa. That turns into 16A just as you enter the park and it's a about two miles from the entrance to Gamelodge. DO NOT turn right on 16A just before you enter the park as that is the Ironhead Highway and you do not want to take your rig on it.

You are going to love it. We have stayed at Gamelodge several times and enjoyed it every time.
I think you meant I-90 not I-80 as it goes no where near S. D.

You are absolutely correct. It is I-90. My bad.
