Baja.

I plan on going to Los Barriles, Baja. What is the best route to reach my destination if I cross at San Luis just outside of Yuma. Are the roads in good condition etc. I have a class A 26 ft. with a 7x12 trailer. Would I better off crossing at Tecate west from me?

X2 Tecate or mexicoruss route if you have time. The road to the south out of San Felipe isn't ready, still paving, but maybe next summer. Here is another site to help you with your travels to Baja, http://forums.bajanomad.com/

I just drove, early last month, the road south from San Felipe and it is paved past Alphonsinas. After that it gets rough but passable in virtually anything. Tractor trailers with 53 foot trailers are driving it regularly. It is much more scenic than Mex 1. From there south to Los Barriles the road is just fine.

Although from my own perspective, while LB is kinda cute, I wouldnt want to spend any real time there. (see my post on the Gringo Paradise of Los Barriles)

I personally find the roads in the Baja to be pretty good and interesting scenic drives.

I really dont think there is anything to worry about no matter where you cross.

  • definetely Tecate. Maybe send an email to dan goy (dagoy at telus.net). He just finished running a caravan down there and will know the latest road condtions.
  • If you do cross at Tecate use Highway 3 to get to Ensenada, it will take you through the Guadalupe wine country, it is beautiful.
  • Stay on the US side and cross at Tecate, gas is cheaper and the roads are better there are no TOPES, if you see them in Baja slow down they are murder on the suspension.
