Let's make it simple and not worry about upwards of $5 US.
When you exit the airport, pay the fee to be delivered to your hotel. It's easy, fast, painless, and not expensive unless you live in Mexico full time.
We live in Zihuatanejo. The official airport taxi's charge about $20US to deliver family and friends to us and hotels. IF you know your way around, you can take the combi, change twice, and get here for 5 bucks in two to three times longer. And it's HOT! What's the point?
When your family wants to visit other locations, ask at the front desk of the hotel or a taxi driver. If they can save significantly, the driver will offer his card and it will go well.
