Baltimore to Charleston SC

Going to take a trip to Charleston SC in a couple of weeks. Not in a big hurry to get there so I was planning on stopping mid way there. Can anyone recommend a place to visit in North Carolina close to 95?

We spent a comical amount of time in the reptile house. :D I tried getting good pictures of a boa constrictor eating a rabbit, but none of them turned out.

The "mexican" restaurant on site sucked, though. That was disappointing.

It was too cold to try any of the rides or anything like that when we were through.
  • I have stayed at the South of the Boarder campground. It's nothing to rave about other then the price is reasonable (we paid 25.xx for the night.) The RV area is gated with key card access only, its far enough away from the highway that all you hear is a low hum, and the sites are mostly level and easy to pull into.

One place that I read about and had planned to stop at before I had a breakdown at the top of NC was Sleepy Bears. It is not a destination campground but seems reasonable for overnights from all the reviews I have read.
  • Please stop at South Of the Border! Dillon county needs the revenue!

  • The winery has some possibility's. We have stopped at South of the Boarder in the past, and actually like the campground. Would really like to find a small micro brewery :)
  • You won't have any trouble finding "South of the Border". The billboard ads begin on I-95 in Maine. :)

There are things to do in the Smithfield area, outlet shopping and a nice winery, Hinnant Winery near Pine Level. There are campgounds right off I95. If you want to drive farther, there is a military museum at Fort Bragg outside Fayetteville. All depends on how far you want to drive in one day.
