Don't know about in the west but here in the east porcupines have been known to chew up all kinds of things. I wouldn't say it's a big problem but it does happen here in the NY Adirondacks where we camp. Not parked cars as much as getting inside out-buildings and chewing on wires and whatever else they can find. Just like any other rodent!
