I believe this porcupine problem is limited to parks like St Mary Alpine and Top of the World (either side of 93). The problem is at the trailheads mainly used by backpackers. The BC hiking forum, Clubtread, is probably the best place to ask.
I have had 2 porcupine encounters. One was in Gunnison Nat Park, Colorado. I heard something under my truck camper, and chased it around the campground a bit by flashlight. The other was near Mesa Falls, ID. In that case, it took a nibble from a rubber mud flap.
