It promises to be a great year in Hyder. Someone spotted a grizzly with a cub a few weeks ago along the Titan trail (near the platform). This could be the first time in years that grizzly cubs will visit Fish Creek!
I've had the good fortune to visit these past two years; last year I spent over a month there. The best time to visit are the first two weeks in August when the bears (some black but mostly grizzly) are hungry. There are two main salmon runs in Hyder; the first being the chum salmon who start arriving in the creek towards the end of July; and the pink salmon who start arriving in late August.
The second half of August however, the berries are ripened which means less bears. If you're lucky, bear activity picks up again early to mid September when the bears need to fatten up for their winter sleep.
Wolves can show up any day during that time although they are very shy and tend to avoid the noisy tourists on the platform (especially if someone shouts 'wolf' and all the tourists come running down the wooden platform).
