As others have said, 199 or 299 are windey. I would not recommend 36 at all.
I have driven 299 with a 30' 5er and while it is windey, it really is doable. 199 means you go to Grants Pass before cutting over. Should you choose this, I would stop at Oregon Caves, half way to Crescent City. Worth the stop.
I would go 299, which takes you to Eureka. Old town worth seeing. Going north on 101 from there is spectacular with several Redwood stands before Crescent City. The real neat part is below Crescent City where you are hugging the ocean while in towering Redwoods!
That is my choice.
PS: Take 44 from 89 to Redding and then pick up 299. It is really pretty from Lassen Park down to Shingletown.
