When in NY, definitely stay off any hwy that is a Parkway, ie: Northern, Cross Island, Meadowbrook, among others. They have very low overpasses and do not accommodate commercial as well as RV's.
The Tappanzee Bridge will take you too far north. I cross the Washington Bridge after 11:00 at night and breeze right through. The daytime can be gridlock. If you can, go over the bridge very early on Sunday or leave NY early Sunday. There is no construction on Sundays except for a few priority sites. Traffic on Sundays may build up after 9am, so by early, I'm thinking around 7.
