One more driver who has enjoyed the 68 79 side trip -- is just a more Pleasant Drive. (I've probably got over 30 trips out and back on all the different routes) This is the most Pleasant, even did it last year in the snow and it was still a piece of cake.
BOL,
that is another issue to consider for a winter trip. Western maryland can get snows fairly deep and early.

A few years ago we were in St Louis and got assigned to MD. So we took I-70, stopped overnight on the East side of Indy and then headed south on 79 to merge into I-68/270 through Frederick.
There were some steep grades that started near Morganton, WV, but doable. Once into MD, it was smoother and faster.
We had our current set-up, F450 & MS. We got to College Park on the 2nd day and set up before dark.
I have frequently gone the 79/68 route but fuel stops seemed at a premium on that stretch and as stated the grades were much worse than 70 all the way.
it is a nice scenic drive however.

I "assume" you need to visit D.C. and stay in the area? If not, catch 15/17 at Frederick and bypass D.C.
