Best route from Niagara falls to NYC (liberty harbor)

I am trying to figure out the best route over to NYC. Google/ bing and mapquest take me 3 different ways. Goodgle takes me I-90 to a short cut (taking rt 20 to rt 41 which leads to I-81) and then lead...

We took that route a couple of years ago when we went from Darien Lake to Watkins Glen. Took highway 20 to 63 then to 36. It's a good route but you drive through some small towns if I recall correctly. No low bridges to worry about. Coming home we took I390 to 36 to 63 through Batavia. We made pretty good time.
