Best route from Ocala, Florida to Scranton, PA

I will be making my first trip from Florida north to Canada. I wondering if it is best to go through Charlotte, NC or Raleigh? I am trying to avoid the heaviest traffic. Will be in a 35ft Class A. Any advice would be appreciated. Peter

  • Make sure you time the your arrival at the I-77 & I81 junction. Friday, Saturday and Sunday it backs up northbound for hours in the afternoon. If you come through M-Thur its fine
  • Thanks to all for the advice. I had planned to take the I95 up to the I26 and go through Columbia. I may have to rethink the first part..... Cheers, Peter

I would go up 75 into Ga..at exit 201...take 23 to Jackson , 16 to Monticello and 83 up to I-20...into Columbia,SC....stay at the Barnyard ..it is an 1 1/2 hr to Charlotte from Columbia up 77 to 81,then 81 to Scranton.. can Stay in Lexington,Va at Lee-Hi campground ...off 81.....Chuck
  • I-95 is HORRIBLE. Pot holes, construction, if there us an accident (common) u r screwed. Trust me, my way is way better. Heck, it ain't that much farther.
A few more hills. Which I like.

Neither? We have been back and forth to Maine several times and I go the entire trip and never get on I95 until I am in Maine.

From Ocala, I would take 301N to I-26W thru Colombia to I-77N to I-81N to I-85. I95 is terrible. My way is scenic and the roads are much better.

Charlotte is the only city you might hit some rush hour but you can time it. At its worst, its not that bad.

    X2
  • I-81 seems to be your best bet.
I did a quick Google Maps check, and while I-95 is a bit quicker and shorter, they do show the I-81 route too.

Avoiding the problems with the larger cities is really about timing....if you drive through at the right time of day, you shouldn't have any issues.

    Have a nice trip!
  • It's a long day of driving between Ocala and Charlotte... about 8 hrs. Just south of Charlotte in Rock Hill, SC, there's a nice county cg called Ebenezer Park. About 5 miles off the Interstate, Exit 82-C IIRC, on Lake Wylie, full hookups 30&50 amp, key coded gated entry, free WiFi, 69 sites, first come/first served, $28/nite. Popular with the locals, but an arrival between Sun-Thurs should get you in. Arrive before dark. There is a KOA at exit 88. Charlotte traffic is bad weekdays between 7-9 a.m. and 3-6 p.m. Sundays during the Panther home games ain't fun either. Travel safe.

  • I have never had any problems going through Charlotte. I do try to avoid going through from 3 to 6 in evening.
