Best route from West Yellowstone to Glacier Nat park

Leaving west Yellowstone and heading to Glacier in late August. First time in that area. Will probably stay somewhere in the west glacier area for a couple of days. Will then head for Spokane, WA. Would like a suggested route suitable for 40' motorhome.
  • If you like to hike, I also prefer the east side of Glacier, however I always take the trip to the west side of the park & drive to Polebridge to hit the Polebridge Mercantile for a cinnamon roll & sticky bun. Great food and an interesting place. (Take your toad).

No reason not to do both - US 2 between the two sides of the park is OK for your motorhome.
  • Probably because he's headed west to Spokane afterward. West and east sides are both nice. With a toad, it's all accessible via day trips anyway.

I stayed a couple nights at Glacier CG 1 mile west of the entrance gate, but I spent much more time around Apgar and the lake shore. It certainly is nice there.

My route was US 287 to MT 287 to Sheridan, where I boondocked a few miles east of town (that dirt track was iffy even for my little rig, though). Then on to MT 41 north to I-90 to US93 to MT 35 around the east shore of Flathead Lake. It seemed pretty easy, and great scenery.
  • Marv - why West Glacier? I, and many others prefer East Glacier.

BTW, I am already planning on Grand Teton, Yellowstone and Glacier for 2016.

Man plans; God laughs. Well, sometimes for sure!

    Regards, my friend.
  • Between Yellowstone and Glacier, you have several great routes to take. Plenty of Forest Service campgrounds and private ones also. There is the fastest route that is US 287 North to I-90 to Missoula, then US 93 North to Kalispell, but here are a couple more "off the beaten path" routes that are good for your MH.

    1. Take US 287 North out to Ennis, then MT 287 to Twin Bridges, then MT 41 to Dillon, then MT 278 to Wisdom, then over to US 93. The route to US 93 goes through ghost towns (Virginia City) and several river valleys that are excellent trout streams (Madison, Ruby, Beaverhead and Big Hole - if you're into that). Pretty country all the way. Then go North on US 93 through the Bitterroot valley to Missoula and Kalispell.

    2. Take US 287 North to I-90, then I-90 North to either Garrison and take MT 141 and MT 200 to MT 83, or stay on I-90 to just south of Missoula and take MT 200 to MT 83, then North to Bigfork. More nice country and rivers that you see in movies.

I have been on all of these routes and all the roads are good for RVs. There are some mountains to go over, but nothing like the Beartooth. Have a great trip...
  • My suggestion is route 191 north from West Yellowstone to I90 west past Missoula to route 93 north to west Glacier area.
