Would like some help picking the best route from Zion to Monument Valley towing a fifth wheel. Thinking about rt 89 to rt 160. Any help will be appreciated, thanks, Dave

  • If your fifth wheel is under the max limition you'll have no problem driving the swithbacks up to the tunnel, here's a little video I did during the road construction back in 2010.

    click on pik for video

They have widen the road and cruves.
  • Sounds like 89 to 98 to 160 for us. Thank you everyone for your help, Dave
  • If the OP takes 89 into Page there's no need to take 89T (temporary) to get to Monument Valley. That's a long way. Instead, he should take 98 out of Page to 160 to Kayenta to 163 to Monument Valley.

Sounds like 89T (temporary) is going to be very slow-going, especially during the week when they're working in the area. It would be a shortcut though if coming from Flagstaff to get to Page.

89T is now open. See post 89T open
  • If not taking the tunnel out of Zion, go to Hurricane, UT on Hwy 9 and pick up UT59 which becomes AZ389 which will take you to Fredonia. Then take AZ89A to Bitter Springs and 89 south to Tuba City where you'll pick up AZ160 to AZ163. Monument Valley is in Arizona right at the border of Utah.

If you consider getting to Kanab, UT from Zion and take UT89 into Page, you can take AZ98 to 160 to Kayenta and 163 to Monument Valley.

Note that between Page, AZ and Bitter Springs, AZ, Hwy 89 is closed for massive repairs so you can't take that. 89A from Fredonia to Bitter Springs is fully open.
  • First be aware you will not be able to leave Zion going east. You will be most likely be too long/high for the tunnel. You will need to go back to Hurricane and take 59 and 389 to Kanab to get to 89.

    Q. What are the size limits for an oversized vehicle?
    A. Any vehicle that is 11 feet 4 inches high or high
er and 7 feet 10 inches wide or wider needs the one-way traffic control service. Any vehicle 13 feet high or higher cannot pass through the tunnel.
Length restrictions are 40 feet for a single vehicle and 50 feet for any vehicle combination.
This information is also listed on the back page of the Park Newspaper. Visitors must pay for the one-way traffic control service at the entrance stations - not at the tunnel.

At Page you can take 98 over to 160 to save a lot of miles. I have not been that route but I understand it is a good, but lonely, road. Google maps street view looks pretty good. Someone should come along to verify that.
