- SuzzeeeQ2012Explorerso, this is Thelma and Louise point.
it is on the Shafer Trail which is NOT for people afraid of heights lol - SuzzeeeQ2012Explorerlol :)
- garyhauptExplorer"they didn't really go over with the car "
they didn't? why do women always exaggerate? and tell fibs..
Gary Haupt - SuzzeeeQ2012ExplorerStagecoach was filmed in Monument Valley AND Moab (which is where we are now). We went to the museum on 128, on the old ranch where some of the things were filmed. Fisher Towers was in a few of the old movies. We went to Dead Horse State Park today where Thelma and Louise flew their car off the cliff. (the crash test dummy is in the museum...they didn't really go over with the car :p
- pnicholsExplorer IIThinking back on some old John Wayne movies I've seen, it seems to me that some of them must have been shot down on the valley floor off the tourist road where the tourist jitneys run. Some of the scenery we saw down there from the RV sure looked "familiar", anyway.
- SuzzeeeQ2012Explorerwe can do that NOW we have extra time :)
not to mention, I bought a book that has all the movies made in Monument Valley and Moab, so that free museum and some of the places they shot movies is on that road :) - garyhauptExplorerSuzie...when you have time..or as your leaving, if heading north..take the right turn, just at the end of town...onto #128. First thing is the spring of FABULOUSO water on your right, but getting to the spigot takes patience...then drive the route. Yes, it means you have to drive maybe an extra hour? or two..whatever, but it so worth the drive. It will bring you back out on #50/6 and then you go left and on back to your routing.
Gary Haupt - SuzzeeeQ2012Explorerthanks for the explanation of the name LOL! I hadn't even noticed it lol
well, we went! It.was.SPECTACULAR!! We camped at Goosenecks, and I"m a bit puzzled about the comment that if we wanted to camp around people, we'd be pretty lonely. It was literally CRAWLING with people lol They would walk right in front of our campsite to see over the edge, which I thought was weird. There were lots of campers moving in and out constantly...seemed like they were there just to stop overnight on their way to somewhere else. BEAUTIFUL camping. NOt one generator the whole time, except ours. I felt guilty running it, so only did about 30 minutes, then would quit :D We're now in Moab, and weren't told that it's Jeep Safari week. Crawlin' with jeeps, and it's pretty fun to watch :) - bka0721Explorer IIIf you know what you are doing, large vehicles can make the route. But, as in a recent time I was there, pilot cars stop southbound (downhill) traffic until the heavy equipment (Bulldozer on a low boy trailer) with a semi pulling it. The original road was built for heavy/large trucks to haul mining fill. They would coordinate their travels in waves and using radios. As I understand, there was a shack at the top of the Moki Dugway that was manned and was the coordinator for the truck traffic. This is the big issue now, meeting other traffic. I do it on a motorcycle and often I have to stop and wait, due to people crowding the inside (where I am riding uphill) to avoid being close to the edge, I presume.
