Best Route Heading West From FL to NM & Beyond

We are heading west from FL in our 34 ft Class A this summer & are looking for the best route. Looks like the choices are basically I-10, I-20 or I-40. I-10 appears to be the shortest, most direct route. Any reason 20 or 40 would be better?

Thanks,
Cass & Lyn
  • Westbound I-10 in Louisiana is the absolute worst road we've been on. Don't go through Houston during rush hour.
  • What they said. If you take the southern route (I-10), take advantage of fuel stops when you see them. Things are pretty sparse between San Antonio and Fort Stockton.

  • Nope, I-10 is the most direct and quickest. In Louisiana get on I-12 to bypass New Orleans then back on I-10. We've been down it and back many times. If you were going to North NM or CO I'd suggest I-10 to Mobile then north to I-20 to Dallas then US 287 to Amarillo and then into NM via I-40.

Not a whole lot to see on any of these routes until you get to western TX. Houston is the only major city it will take you 3 hours or so to get thru it. Do not get on the HOV lanes in Houston they may lead you to places you don't want to go.
  • Qny way you do it, that haul across Texas west of San Antonio is long and pretty boring. I use I-10, and hope for a tailwind.
