Anything north of San Francisco (US 101), Sacramento (I5) and Lancaster (CA14 and then US395) will avoid all the CA traffic issues. Personally I like US101 north of San Francisco when headed north. If you want a good private RV park for a base to explore the Redwood Highway & Avenue of the Giants, try ANCIENT REDWOODS RV PARK in Redcrest.
