If it were us and only heading to the redwoods, I'd probably say US-60, US-93, I-40, CA-58, I-5, CA-20, US-101. While going up US-101, get off and drive Avenue of the Giants in the Humboldt Redwoods. Getting through the Sacramento area will probably be your biggest pain. You will have to deal with narrower roads, curves and hills getting over to coastal northern California.
