Best route through Nashville

I don't have a lot of experience in Nashville, but I will say that I passed through on I-24, both directions, while on a trip back in Oct/Nov. Both times were weekdays - once midday and the other later near rush hour (around 4). There is a lot of lane changing required because of the highways that merge and split throughout the city, but I did not find it problematic to go right through.

Get off I-24 on to Briley Parkway, also marked as SR-155. Go west/south and stay on Briley until you get off onto I-40 west of town. Exit onto I-40 and go EAST just a couple of miles and pick up 440. There is a big ramp from Briley Parkway onto I-40, and it dumps you on I-40 close to 440.

MUCH easier and safer than going through downtown, although a few more miles. Briley Parkway is the best-kept secret around.

As always, check Google Maps, Waze, and/or TDOT smartway site for traffic conditions before you commit to a route.

I was looking at this route and wondering if, the little bit of extra time and mileage, was worth it at noon time.

I agree use Briley Parkway, I use it going North I-24, saves a lot of stress, take your time. it also goes right by the Grand Old Opry.

Around Noon you should be fine so I would go from I-24 to the I-65 turn off right thru downtown. Rush hour is a different story and avoid it at all costs. The Briley Parkway is East of down town and once you hit I-40 it can get congested depending on time of day but its always heavy traffic at the connection to I-40, still do-able if you go that way but just be prepared and bring you patience.

I have never taken 155 around the west side but have gone around the east side when traveling up 24. Done it several times, and found it to be much better than thru town.

In August came south thru town on 24 at about 7 pm. The road surface is horrible and the traffic was fast and crazy with a fair amount of construction. I regretted it and will never go thru downtown again, not even at midnight, the pavement is too rough and irregular, and way too much lane changing.

Couldn't agree more - got stuck going through during evening rush hour - a nightmare - worse that going through Atlanta. We now make sure our routes don't go near Nashville!!

Going thru Nashville is really hit or miss midday. The east side I24/65 has been repaved and is much better than during this summer. I would take I65 around the west side of the city. Briley Pkwy. is less traveled but will take longer if the interstates are not backed up.

If it were me, and I go thru Nashville during different times of the day I would blow thru on the interstate.

Disclaimer- Nashville traffic is terrible at best and I grew up there.
