Best route through San Antonio and Houston

What is the best route through San Antonio and Houston going west to east on I-10? Stay on I-10 or take one of the loops? We will be pulling a 30' travel trailer. Thanks in advance!!
  • I can't help you with the route, but a suggestion is if you use a GPS that has a speaker, turn it on when in congested traffic so you don't have to watch the screen. My Garmin 760 has a very loud speaker that's clear enough for my poor hearing. It lets me know in plenty of time when I need to make a turn or move over without needing to watch the screen instead of traffic.

  • Don't do Houston on a Friday afternoon like we did. Traffic was terrible.
  • Stay on I-10. Once, thru San Antonio there was lots of construction. I just stayed in the middle lane and got thru OK. The next time (2 years later) no construction and just breezed thru. Houston as far as I can remember was never a problem.
Just stay away from ANYWHERE during "rush hours". Leave early (like 7AM) and pull in early (like 3PM) and traffic problems should be minimal.

    Just my experiences.
  • Stay on I-10 through San Antonio. The loops take longer and are more congested,

Get to or through SA in the evening if your schedule allows.

Pull into Travelers World in SA after 6PM and leave there 7AM the next morning and you will be going through Houston ~noon. Or stop at the KOA or anywhere you feel safe east of SA.

Stay on I10 going through Houston.

It was also really terrible on a Sunday morning in May when we drove up from Galveston and around an outer loop headed west.

San Antonio wasn't bad on a Tuesday morning during rush hour.
  • Straight thru and avoid "rush hours" on both. Weekend mornings are even better.
  • It is hard to "go around" Houston along the east/west route. Concerning I-10, you might consider taking the 610 loop around to the north to avoid the downtown area. Whichever way you choose, keep your eye out for the lane changes that are required to stay on the route either way. Avoid rush hour if possible, especially on the west side of downtown. Rush hour east of town is not nearly as bad.

As for I-10 through San Antonio, I tried that several years ago and swore I would not do it again, since it requires several freeway changes just to stay on the I-10 highway. If you look at a map, you will note that I-10 is the long way round and SH-46 & SH-1604 (a freeway for most of the way) "cut the corner." I began using SH-46 all the time when I used to drive to Kerrville with some regularity to see my father. It is not a freeway, but a good road. You will only see traffic when coming through New Braunfels, depending on the time of day.

When towing my fifth wheel out to West Texas, I generally use SH-1604.
