Best route to Pomo RV park in Fort Bragg from SF Bay area

Hi,
planning a trip from the east bay of SF(Brentwood CA) to Pomo RV park in Fort Bragg, been reading some comments about getting their via HW1 a little hairy.

wondering if anyone has made this trip from the SF bay area up and if it's better to go hw 128/ca-1 or go 101 up to hwy 20 and come in.

Any feedback on the park and the best way in most appreciated.

  • Also, if you are a mountain biker, there are great trails in the Jackson State Forest nearby -- not at all challenging -- dirt roads through the redwoods. Just be alert for logging trucks -- not a big problem.

You can also ride in Russian Gulch and Van Damme, by the way. Also very easy trails. And there is a coastal trail at MacKerricher State Park. And don't forget the trail next to Big River, just south of Mendocino. Again, not difficult at all -- really just dirt roads, not single-track. (I used to ride technical single tracks. Not anymore. Too many injuries, too old. Sigh.)
  • thanks for the replies, I have a 28ft TT and relative newbie, only had it out a half dozen times, hence the hesitation on routes.

thanks also for the suggestions on things to do. I've only driven through their once, so interested to get out and check out the area. Should be much cooler than the 100+ I'm suspecting here in the SF east bay that time of year.
  • 101 to 20 is faster than 128, in my experience. On 20, be sure to use the pullouts to let faster traffic go by.

You probably already know this, but when at Pomo, don't miss Russian Gulch, Van Damme, and the Mendocino Headlands. All are spectacular!!
  • Either route (128) or (20) is fine. I have done both in our 40' DP towing a Ford Edge. Both routes are slow going, but very doable. You should have no problems. Just take it slow and pull over to allow passing when possible.
  • 101 north to highway 20(out of Willits) west to highway 1 south to Pomo.
Many, Many RVs of various sizes traverse this highway year round.
Contact Pomo or the Ft Bragg chamber of commerce for questions.
  • just drove HW 1 in my toad, no way I would take that route with a motor home or any large RV the road from Willits over to the coast is hairy in spots but can be done.
