Best way around Oklahoma City

Hey all,

I'm heading East on the 40 and then East on the 44 out of Oklahoma City. What's better, 40 to 35 to 44, or John Kilpatrick Tpke around to the 44?

Thanks,
Bruce
  • Turnpike, hands down. Just as in everything else, be prepared, have a good supply of quarters just in case. Cost for my 40' pusher with toad (four axles) is $2.30 for one leg. I seldom take the western leg, but assume the cost for that leg would be the same. So with five bucks worth of quarters, you are good to go.

Depends on the time of the day(rush hour 5pm-6pm) and if there is a wreck on the road holding up traffic.

If the road looks clear; take 40 straight across and 35 up no problem. If you want guaranteed no obstacles(potential backed up traffic) you can take the turnpike to bypass the interstate. But then you have to deal with 2 toll booths(no line or short line if any).

The highway will seem faster as there is more to see(more scenic). The turnpike seems to wind around and it's mostly remote on the western north/south stretch.
  • For my dime the Kilpatrick is a much better road than 40 to 35 to 44 and is quicker as well but if you don't have a pike pass then it can be a problem as there are some toll places that do not have attendants, found that out when I told some friends to go that way and they had to run a toll collection booth and wait for the OHP after the alarm sounded.
  • Bruce, the John Kilpatrick is probably faster, but as Johnny T said there are two toll booths you have to stop at. I think they do have dollar bill changers just before the toll chute, and sometimes they give the users trouble, then you just have to keep on going! If you can save up a bunch of change before you get on it will be a lot faster. I can't remember how much the toll is. And as someone else said I-44 is also a toll road. (you probably already know that)
  • We have always done 40 to 35 to 44 (in both directions). As I recall going South on 35 the exit for 40 West comes up kind of sudden.

44 East of 35 is also toll road.
  • We always take the Turnpike. But if you do not have a pike pass stopping at the toll plazas can be a hassle.. some are unattended and need exact change... If you have time get yourself a pike pass.
