Best way from Delaware to Mass WITHOUT the gw brdge/lower ct

Hi all!
Heading back home from the outer banks NC to massachusetts..
What a nightmare it was coming thru lower Connecticut on 95 and the GWB- everything was one lane.. Took 3+ hours at midnight on a Wednesday!

Any ideas of a better route to cross the Hudson a bit further up? Maybe grab 84 or the mass pike afterwards?

I'm thinking something thru north east New Jersey/pa cutting across the lower Hudson but above New York??

Thanks in advance everyone!!!

  • The NY and CT parkways have VERY low bridges. You don't want to go near those.
  • RV's are allowed on the Garden State. "Trucks" are required to exit at 105. It's commercial vehicles that are prohibited.

There are one or two bridges that are low at the shoulders, but the traffic lanes are good. These are in the milepost 130's area.

Not perfect, but much better than the gwb....

NJ turnpike to garden state parkway to NY thruway, over the Tappan Zee bridge, then I-684 to I-84 to either I-91 or the Mass Pike.
I thought any thing over 7000lbs. cant go north of mile marker 105,GSP, is this true or do you get off before 105? Thanks
  • Can trucks use the garden state parkway? Parkways in Ny are no trucks if I remember right.. Not sure about jersey

  • We always use the bridge on I-84 when we travel to/from OBX and Maine. We usually even avoid New Jersey completely by going along Rt 209 on the Pennsylvania side.
