Best way to bypass San Francisco
Coming from the north what would be the best time of day and the best route to go around San Francisco and get back on 101?

If you've never crossed the Golden Gate before I would just suck it up and do that - mid day being better than the morning or evening rush hour.
Then take 1 to I-280 to 85 and rejoin 101 south of San Jose
Otherwise I-580 to I-880 to 101
