I've had the same issues as the OP. In my last truck, a 2002 Chevy 2500HD, I only had the stock tank, which was a whopping 24 gallons. What was GM thinking! So I had to stop for diesel ... a lot. The new truck has a 36 gal. tank so I hope to not stop as often. I have a dumb phone so I can't use the apps that everyone talks about.
This leaves me with having to manage the fuel and stop when I think it might be easy to get in someplace that has trucker lanes and, on long trips, I carry two 5 gal. cans of diesel as a back up.
Something else ... my 2002 Chevy had the small filler neck for diesel which meant that the large nozzles that the truckers use didn't fit which meant that I had to hold the fill nozzle at the opening of the tank and very carefully (and very slowly) baby the valve to fill the tank. It takes a looong time to do it this way!
