Best way to choose diesel stop

One of the most frustrating things to me is trying to figure out a good place to fill my truck with diesel. I am pulling a 34ft full profile 5th wheel. I removed some of the aggravation by installing a 50 gallon aux gravity feed tank in the bed. On a long trip from east tx to Wash DC last year, DW & I discovered that lot of so-called "truck stops" coming up on GPS turned out to be duds, (hard to get into & out off, no dedicated RV fuel lanes, etc). How can I know before hand what the layout looks like of the potential fuel stops? Thanks in advance for any help!

  • If you have a smarty phone, download the pilot and loves apps. They can help you locate, but really I would say invest into a next exit book. I found that the GPS really doesnt know who actually carries diesel.

If a tractor trailer can negotiate the lanes to get fuel, you shoukd have no problem.
  • Its never been a issue for me in 9 years. Been to western Mt; Moab,Utah;Charleston,S.C.;Ft. Mead, Maryland. I try not to use RV lanes and use big rig lanes instead or fill up unhitched. Most convenience store type lanes just don't work for our rig. Oh and I don't use a gps. I find that the interstate roads are well marked for services I need and US roads have towns every now and then with easily accessed stations right on side of road.
  • 50 gal tank + truck tank. I'd never need to pull the fiver into a fuel station although I do regularly I just pick a exit that advertises 3 or 4 brands I can always fit in one of them. Did have to have DW stop traffic once when some yahoo blocked my exit. Fuel up after you drop the fiver for the night and take the family out to eat.
  • Go to gas buddy and have a look, a friend of mine uses it all the time. We use Flying J primarily as they are normally clean and easy to get in out of. Pilot are also part of the fly J branding. Safeway stores usually have good access for trucks and trailers. Problem with using the big truck pumps is that they are set up for no highway taxes and in AZ it is not legal to use them with light duty vehicles.
  • Why are you looking for dedicated RV lanes at truck stops if you need diesel anyway? We always pull in the truck lanes at major fuel stops and never have any problems. I don't think you are likely to find many truck stops on your GPS unless you have a truck version. However, there are a number of Android apps that will find them for you.
