Best/safest route from Phoenix to South Lake Tahoe Dec 1 ?

US95 is often mentioned as a route between Reno and Vegas. I forgot that US95 itself does not go that far west. It's US395 that comes into Carson City from the south. But in winter they probably want to avoid the California parts of 395, which tend be higher. So catching US50 further east makes sense.
