Big Water to Escalante, UT

I see there are BLM roads or something that does that. Looks like it might be interesting to drive - MAYBE! Any info on that?

We would go up from Page via Big Water. Would not plan on doing the whole thing but just to see part of it.

We would do it in our Chebby one ton long bed 4wd.

Thanks.
  • There are multiple routes to take with the most direct being Smokey Mtn Rd. I grew up in Page and did a lot of exploring around there in everything from a dirt bike to a 1 ton truck (and forgotten some of it).

If there hasn't been a recent rain you shouldn't have any issue. Expect some rough spots and washboards. I have gone out there in the spring after heavy rain and flooding before the roads were repaired and 4wd was a must.

Normally you could get around in a 2wd and many places a typical sedan.

Smokey Mtn is a steep climb at the switchbacks but I don't remember it being bad after that. Be sure to go farther east to Alstrom Point at the beginning of your trip for some good 1000ft cliff lake overlooks.

Verify your spare tire. Take plenty of water. Bring a good tow rope/strap just in case. Might be worth your while to stop in at the station on the west side of the road at Big Water for current road conditions.

    Have fun!
  • The dirt road from Rt89 up to Rt.12 at Cannonville is a fairly easy, pretty drive in a 4x4 Truck. There are at least 2 creeks to cross that can be 3 to 4 ft. deep rite after a big rain. Normally only about 1 ft. deep & only about 10 ft. across. Grossvenor arch & Kodachrome St. park are real nice visits.
  • OK, we have a one ton Chebby long bed 4x4. We are used to mountain driving.

That being said, we are not into atv roads and have not any love for sheer, narrow shelf roads anymore. Been there, done that.

Not sure what I would do with a tow rope out in the middle of no place with no one else around! :-)
