  • I think the real story is not wrong VIN #'s it is seizing items without even speaking to the owners These things have happened in both Marinas and RV parks many years ago. But there were no armed police or military. Simply a SAT inspector. Some of those boats are legal. But others probably had bought 10 year permits more than 10 years ago and to get a new permit the boat has to leave Mexico and be reimported. Seems like Mexico is taking lessons from Homeland security or the Saudis. Regardless it is bad publicity.

  • When we imported out motorhome to Canada from the USA the ONLY official that insisted on visually inspecting the vin on the rig was the agent for ICBC when we registered it in BC. She said that not long before she had found one vehicle with the wrong VIN on the paperwork--a couple of digits had been reversed. It had escaped the notice of the selling dealer, the US Customs export agent who was checking that the vehicle wasn't stolen(!) and Canada Customs on import. Must admit that we never checked either!

I'm almost afraid to check the motorhome and jeep!:S

  • Twice in my life - my first TT in 2011 and a 1993 Mercury - when I went out and checked the VIN actually on the trailer/ car - it didn't match the one on the paperwork.

It happens at a new dealer lot more than people realize.

My daughter works for a Dallas area car dealer - and last week had a couple come in to trade their four year old Honda - and the VIN didn't match the paperwork.

After several phone calls and checks - the original dealer discovered two identical cars sold the same day went home with the wrong owner.

They are still trying to sort out the paperwork - because the other car has been sold out of state at least once. They hadn't found it yet.
  • Old story.
1975 had our motor home seized because local cops in Mulege said the vin number on the vehicle did not match "their" registration data...

Ya right. It cost us a thousand pasos to make it right.
  • Right. Imagine having the wrong VIN number and the nightmare you would have if it were your vehicle in your home state.

Our Mexican plated Rv gets a thorough inspection of its VIN number and the pedimento or importation permits.

It may be Mexico but we have rules too.
  • Always check to see that the Temporary Importation Permit (TIP) has the correct spelling of names, adresess and vehicle identification numbers, and licence plate numbers and most important the correct day, month and year.

If not have them redo the paper work before you leave the agency where they are being issued.
