Boise to Redding CA

I will be heading from Boise ID to Redding CA in about 3 weeks and am looking for good ideas on the best way. I have looked at numerous routes but am looking for some good advise from those who have driven some of these roads. I would prefer to stay off the interstates as much as possible.

How is Hwy # 78 from Burns Junction to Burns, OR. ?

thanks for all your great advice

Jon

  • If you want the fastest easiest route the suggestions here are good.

If you are willing to take an interesting meander and see some of the lesser known sights, check out the Frenchglen and Steens area.
  • We drove from Boise to Redding last month. Took the same route to Burns as sdianel did. Then US395 to US299. Good road and not busy. There is a nice campground at Goose Lake State Park right on the California/Oregon border. We have also stayed at Burns RV Park, nice quiet park with wide pull throughs.
  • We just drove from Boise to Burns and took I-84 West, to Ontario, take exit 374 OR 201 toward US26/20, stay straight to stay on 201, then right on US20/26 west. When 20/26 splits, stay on US20 into Burns. We stayed at Burns RV Park before you get into town and it was great for an overnight stop.
  • SE Oregon is 'high desert', an extension of Nevada. Lots of open space, some 'rims'.

Google Maps suggests as fastest (and shortest) US20 to US395 to NE California. That's all major 2 lane highways. There some hills has you cuts across Calif to Redding.

An alternative it gives takes OR140 over the Klamath Falls, and US97 to I5. 140 crosses a modest mountain range, with some grades, but nothing difficult.

The third is US95 into Nevada, and I80 to US395 (from the south) into Calif. That's longer, but not much slower.

Why are you asking about OR78? It's similar to other roads in the area, flat and mostly straight.

If you are interested in scenic driving off the main highways I could suggest some things in SE Oregon.
