Boise to Phoenix

There are two routes from Boise to Phoenix. One is 93 south out of Twin Falls, Idaho, while the other route is I-84 to I-15 through Salt lake city. Each has their own characteristic...93 is single lane, narrow in spots and no cell signal in spots. I-15 through SLC is freeway but busy and hectic to drive for about 90 miles from Ogden to Provo. Couple of questions...
1...has anyone taken the cutoff on the I-15>>67>>215>>i-15. and IS it any less hectic during mid morning early afternoon times.
2...which route do most of you prefer

  • I have used the 215 through SLC a number of times. Smooth sailing.

Towed through SLC on I-15 in a wet snow squall one afternoon. It was busy, all lanes full, traffic moving about 40 mph. Didn't find it "hectic"... not one accident or delay. Couple slowdowns at interchanges. They drive like they are used to it or something...

Sunday morning at about 7:00 a.m. is The Best Time to transit SLC....

We have always taken HGW 93 to Ely, then 6 and 318 to Ash Springs and back on 93. Then we avoid Las Vegas by going through Lake Mead National Park.

How is that road thru lake Mead NP

I pulled my 40' 5er from I-15 thru Moapa Valley on 169/167/564 to Henderson, NV going through a goodly portion of the Lake Mead NRA. Road is good; a little narrow but if you take your time, it's a nice ride. Even had a pullout or two to take a break.

The road is a good 2 lane all the way, the north half was rebuilt a few years ago and the south half has always been good (ie since we started using the route in early 200x).
  • I would take 93 for that trip. Overnight in Ely.
Do it about every year except to SoCal instead of Phoenix.
I15 is longer and more traffic and nothing special for me.
