Boondocking areas along the Glenn hwy?

With the fires on the Kenai we are going to head up towards Glenallen this weekend. Can always go to Lake Louse but are there any other nice spots with some fishin off the Glenn within a few hrs of Palmer?
Thanks.

  • Little Nelchina State Recreational Area is at MP 174.8 which is about 95 miles from Palmer. It sits right on the Little Nelchina River. We have stopped there 3 times. Since we don't fish I can't speak to what is in the river but have seen people fishing there each time we stopped.

It is a FREE campground with no services. Several sites on the upper level are large enough to take a 45' motorhome but the ones on the lower level are for smaller units. A very nice place to stop off for the night.

We watched rafts being put in here.

I took a couple of photos of the river. You can see them at the website in my signature. Go to the box marked "2009 Photos - Alaska" and select the "Alaska, May 5 to Jun 16" tab. We were there on Jun 15 so if you don't want to go through all of the photos, then just scroll through them backwards and you will get to the Nelchina River photos much quicker.
  • Sourdough BLM campground is maybe an hour north of Glenallen - right on the river for some fishing. ST
  • Eureka can be nice as long as the wind is blowing enough to keep the bugs away. You can also try to camp at the HAARP place like Jesse Ventura tried, let us know how THAT works out. Have fun!
