I have in hand an E mailed response to my questions and it says nothing. Talks about how they are working with 'stakeholders". No mention of how they intend to actually close the border and talks about the legal responsibilities "to present oneself to authorities". I guess one could drive back to Stewart outside of operating hours and then return to the offices after 8am.

I don't know how well that would be received, tho.

Just to up-date. I had a phone conversation with a CBSA officer from Vancouver, who really had no idea about anything. I was told that I would receive a call from someone more knowledgeable about the plan.

Should I ever get that call, I will relate.

Went into Hyder last summer for a few hours. No US immigration.

Came back after trying to drive up to Salmon Glacier & spent 1/2hour at Canadian Imigration checkpoint. Their scanner did not like the barcode on my passport. Very odd since the passport has been stamped numerous times by Canadian imigration, including that very same Stewart one on previous trips plus we had entered Canada not 2 weeks prior & it was stamped then.

Oh well.

As for the residents of Hyder I am sure that they will go right through any barrier should a tsunami be coming their way. Besides, all of us daytrippers are back into Canada long before the border is closed for the night.

My DW was raised in Stewart (1964 / 78) she is a reformed candy Smuggler from the USA back to Canada.
Back in the old days they would run the boarder on thier bicycles with the booty of candy from the only store in Hyder that would serve them. O'll Gary at the Sea Alaska would,not dare serve these kids booze because he knew that thier Moms would have words with him.
So time and time again these kids would stealthily ride their Eatons Purchased CCM Doumatic Bikes past Old Tommy at the Jewlery Story in Hyder that was an incalndesent site for the USA boarder crossing into Alaska to buy their booty.
They would then slowly peddle to the Canadain balder crossing and just as soon as the Canadain guy would get up from his chair to come and greet them, they would vamoose.....
They would then peddle as fast as they could, with a paper bag full of candy ........ and ride like hell back across the Boarder to the home land of Canada.
However the guy on the Canadain side wasn't going to let these kids escape without paying their taxes and duty on the Candy, so he would fire up the Siren to anounce that " you better Stop"
However these kids were Northern Canadian athletes and could peddle like the dickins down the road back into Stewart and alud capture......many times.....and never pay a sent in duty or taxes.
Later in life we would get to the Canadian side of the boarder at Stewart and chat with the Canadain crossing gaurd who we would find out at one time, was baby sat by my DW, and we again made it back to the home land with bags of candy.... Tax and duty free!
Hence the name of Soup to throw off all government officials , by no ravelling our real names!

Time will tell what happens up there, however the hours of that crossing is open have changed many times over the years, time will tell the outcome and you can bet that the people of Hyder and Stewart will have few words to say on this subject.

Hyder Alaska is also the only area of Alaska that does not use the 907 area code. They use the 250 of BC. Up until a few years back, the state of Alaska did not run a school in Hyder, so BC bused the Hyder kids to Stewart for school every day. There are some Hyderites that went all 12 years to school in Stewart BC. As far as I know, BC never charged the out of country, Alaska kids to attend. The Alaska kids just learned to sing, God save the Queen, like every one else.

But on a much more serious note, with alchohol being so much cheaper in the US, due to the different tax structures, many from Stewart would drive over to Hyder to the bar to drink in the evenings. Now they have to be back into Canada by midnight or spend the night in Hyder Alaska. Major problem for some of those folks as well as the bar owners in Hyder.

Not sure the closing of the Canadian station would have any effect on leaving Canada for Hyder. We never have had to stop on the way over to Hyder, just on the way back to Stewart. Don't see how that would change any.

One of the really neat thing about the Stewart/Hyder relation is as follows...Stewart has the only medical facility, an actual hospital. Many Hyder folks are not financially okay. Meaning they are on state of fed assistance, so that means the medical plans..Medicaid? whatever. There is NO med facility in Hyder and don't forget..this a Alaska. Long ways from anywhere US. So, bureaucracy has been dealt common sense and the folks of Hyder that fall into that category, access needed care in Stewart and the BC Medical system does the paperwork. That..is just good policy.
