BRIDGEPORT CA TO ANGELS CAMP CA BEST ROUTE

Greeting: We're planning a trip to Bridgeport California for some flyfishing this summer, going up Hwy 395 in California. After that we'd like to go to Angel's Camp in Calaveras County. I know that Tioga Pass is one route, but I hear it's pretty scarry if you're pulling a trailer, We've got a 30 ft 5er. Can anyone recommend a better way of getting there. A couple years ago, we went to Bridgeport and then to Lake Tahoe. We just went up 395 and cut across to Tahoe with no problem, but Tahoe is pretty far up from Angel's camp. I would hate to travel all that extra way. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks..
  • DO NOT tow over Hwy 108 or Hwy 4.

Hwy 120 to 49 then north to Angels Camp is the way to go. Have a good time in Angels Camp. And while there, check out Stories In Stone, an incredible rock shop on Hwy 49 in the historic district that has 5 ft tall geodes.
  • 108 may be 40 miles shorter, but it will take longer, except on a motorcycle.
  • Highway 120 is the best way to get there. The only better road than 120 is to go up to 50 and the only road better than that is I-80. Although I wouldn't do it in my motorhome, somebody on here not long ago reported driving a 40 foot Class A over Highway 108 and said they didn't have a problem. If you're worried about Tioga, I would not do 108.

Here's some distances for you from Google:

On Highway 108 it's 112 miles from Bridgeport to Angels Camp.
Taking 120 over Tioga is 153 miles.
Going all the way up to 50 and then coming down 49 is 222 miles.
Going to I-80 and then coming down 49 is 271 miles.
  • Agree, Hwy 120 thru Yosemite and all the way to Hwy 49, then north to Angels Camp. Two areas of concern. Climbing from Hwy 395 to the entrance to Yosemite. good road, but definitely a pull to the top. Just west of Groveland is Priest grade. Downhill direction, and curvy. Just take it easy. Other than those two issues, it's a good drive.
  • Funny coincidence... I was at work reading your post at the same time I was working on a report for our site in Angels Camp. I've never been there so can't help you with route.
  • Just don't take Hwy 108 or Hwy 4. both too steep, too narrow, and too twisty. Tioga, hwy 120 should be no problem, but be advised you will have to pay the entrance fee for Yosemite. sure it is steep and twisty, but with turnouts it is doable if you have any mountain driving experience.
  • Tioga is no problem. Use the pullouts as necessary. Your truck will have no trouble.
