Bringing a gun, staying out of trouble in Canada

It says in the regulations that handguns with longer barrels are restricted weapons and can be brought into Canada with the correct documentation. It also says that approval for these handguns will not be granted for 'hunting' and 'protection'.
From what I have read on this forum over many years, is that normally the only reason when these are actually permitted in is when you have documentation for a shooting competition that requires these weapons.
