Thought this forum would be most appropriate place to ask this:My brother moved to Cabo about 5 years ago, bought a house, lives there. A little over a year ago he rescued a little puppy that somebody tossed into a garbage bin, barely weaned. It's now full grown and his best companion. Unknown mixed breed, likely from a street dog, about 75 pounds now.Soon, he will be selling his home and moving back to Canada, driving up the Baja, through Tijuana to California and north into Canada.Obviously, he will have whatever documentation he can for the dog, make sure his shots are current etc. Does anyone know what process he will have to go through to import the dog? Will it have to be quarantined? If so, for how long, and where?Is there any specific papers he should seek out and have for the animal?What can be done to streamline the process?Thanks in advance.

I think I would research the web sites of both the United States and Canada for my answers rather than rely on anonymous posters from any internet forum for answers.

As long as there is veterinary documents that are current for vaccines for rabies, and that the vet has checked For ticks, worms, mange and other deasease and that the dog is in good over all healt, there should be no problem at the borders, in other words a dog passport.Check on the internet Customs and Border Protection, Agriculture Department for the documents required, same goes for Canada.It is nice to know that we are anonymous posters, some of us have travelled, studied, or lived in Mexico for many years and travelled acrost the Mexico-US border with dogs and cats, so my anonimous compatriotas let us answer with the collective knowledge that we poses.Que pasen buenas noches y no ladren mucho!navegator

I don't know about Canada, but the US is very easy. The dog needs to have the vet booklet (it's a Mexican thing) that shows that he has had a rabies shot within the last year. That's it.At the border with the US, he may be asked for the proof of rabies, but very likely won't be. I always kept the rabies paperwork sitting on the console under my passport so that IF I was asked for it, it was handy.Check out my stickies at the top of the Forum Easy Border Crossing Tips, and hopefully someone can definitely say what the requirements for Canada are.Moderator

Ours are part of the family and we don't like leaving them behind.

I can just imagine if the dog drove all the way from Mexico to Canada, how many rest stops, trees and fire hydrants that would take?

We brought a Mexican cat to Canada. No problems. The Vet printed out a fancy health certificate. Even had his Vet seal and a photo of the cat. We called it her passport!
