Is tap water in campgrounds generally potable, or not?
Generally it is, but we found a number of provincial and state campgrounds in Canada and Alaska with signs saying to "boil water before use" (and this was tap or hand-pump water, not stream water). You aren't going to boil enough water on a three-burner RV stove to fill even a significant part of an RV fresh water tank.
So we generally carried 10 gallons of "city water" on our entire 3-month trip last year. That amount would get us through at least a day and night, including short showers, if needed. Then we stopped at the next town and refilled it, generally at the same place we dumped our tanks (many provincial parks have no dumps).
