I agree with the route as we travel to the western slope every year and I stopped using the interestate a long time ago. But I have to ask, what difference does the OP's truck have to do with it? Just wondering. - AllworthExplorer IIYou don't say what truck you are running, but Monarch is always our choice. - padredwNomadMake that recommendation three times: US 50 over Monarch to Gunnison (We have towed our 34' fifth-wheel over Monarch many times, and we always stay in Gunnison at the Tall Texan RV Park) then on to Montrose.
Monarch Pass has many "passing lanes" so we have never experienced traffic build up.
In Buena Vista we usually stay at the Arrowhead Point RV north of town. - joe_b_Explorer IIMy choice would be the same as Bipeflier, west on Hwy 50 to Montrose, turn right and follow 50 to Junction. We did that route this summer and it is the best way to get over the mountains, in Colorado. From Montrose north it is a 4 lane.
- BipeflierExplorerYou really have only 2 reasonable options.
24 to I-70 or Hwy 50 over Monarch to Montrose then north.
The latter would be my choice. Once on top or Monarch it is pretty much all downhill from there. Better, wider roads with fewer sharp turns and much less traffic. Others opinions may (will) vary.
