Buffalo in Canada...Absolutely

We have bison in North America; the two species of buffalo are native to South Asia and Africa. Beautiful animals, though.

Anytime you want to get technical with mammal species names, Second, is ok with me. Otherwise those are BUFFALO. In English or Latin, your choice. I prefer the Lakota...pté (buffalo cow), thatháhka (buffalo bull) or Arapaho: bii (buffalo cow), henéécee (buffalo bull).

I believe that's a wood bison, a different species than the bison (buffalo) in the western continental US.

The Yukon is a marvelous place indeed, and it's always a treat to see wildlife.

Different subspecies?

Thank you for the nice comments. Glad you enjoyed the pictures. We took about 2000 pictures of scenery, wildlife, and fish. Amazing trip.

The best photos are on our family blog. Had a wonderful summer until my DW stepped off the back deck of the TC and landed on her back on the gravel. Cut the trip short 5 or 6 weeks. All is well now. Very thankful. Even old people can heal up.

A 'Wood' bison, looks like a real bison to me.

Actually, looks just like the ones here in Kansas.

As Lwiddis suggested, I misremembered a little. They are indeed a different subspecies, but not a different species. The wood bison tend to be a bit bigger and heavier and a little differently built than the plains bison. All are impressive animals, somehow both majestic and (in my opinion) somewhat ugly at the same time. Seeing them is a treat, particularly since there are no bison of any sort to be found in Vermont.

Just as an aside to the semantics, did you know that the Buffalo is on the Manitoba Providential Flag? And it's big just like all the others.

The Yukon was the area of the continent that was used to plan attractions at Disneyland and their nature series. Turn a bend at Disneyland and Boom, there's a Buffalo, next corner Boom, there's a Wolf. In fact a we drove thru the Yukon and AK as we read the MilePost, we thought we were in Disneyland or watching one of the Disney nature movies. Driving up the road to Breyburn Lodge for our cinnamon roll, the Mile Post talks about the Stone Sheep coming down and licking the salt off the highway. Pulled over to look and just like at Disneyland, ten seconds later there were the Stone Sheep.

The Yukon is truly Fantasyland. Beautiful photographs.

If you ever go thru Edmonton AB.there is Elk Island park with plenty of bison/bufalo to see..
Also many stores sell bison meat if you care to try it,,I find it bit dry,lean not much fat in it..
