  • Most fuel stations I've seen have some sort of sticker on the pumps indicating that a hold MAY be placed on your financial institution, and will give the potential maximum amount. There's usually another sticker that states that if paid inside, there is no hold, or a minimal hold, depending on the state. Don't know why there would be a difference, unless it has something to do with more fraud potential with a skimmer device at the pump versus going inside and probably using the EMV chip on one's card.
  • I think where you find this practice it is because of the policy of the credit card (cc) company or the intermediary. It is common to see signs posted at hotels notifying that a charge against the anticipated costs will be placed on the credit card and may last a few days after departure. Same is true when purchasing diesel on the CC at many locations. You could use multiple CC at the point of purchase. One card until the pump stops, then the second card, and often you can use the first card again. That way you will only be charged for the fuel dispensed. Or, if purchasing inside, instead of saying "a fill up" specify a dollar amount less than you really need. You won't top off, but you will not have a carry over charge.
    Happy Trails.
  • Many gas stations will put a hold on your card just as a hotel would.
Usually not 100.00 and the hold is UP TO 3 days.
Trucks stops probably have a higher hold due to the size of the potential loss.
  • Not saying this is not true, but if true, has no effect on me.
