bypass Baltimore via rt 32?

I will be heading out soon, going from the Delmarva Peninsula headed westward. I want to bypass Baltimore, looking at google maps and earth, rt 32 looks like a good way to go, limited access most of the way until it intersects with I70. So I'm looking at I270 to rt 32 to I70 west. Any one with experience with this route?

  • I'll see how traffic is, if I can make it to 100 before traffic comes ta standstill I'll go that way, otherwise I'll get off of I97 early and take 33.
  • Bussskipper has the best route. 100 is now limited access all the way to US29 from 97 and moves very very well. Misses all of the junk.
You are only on 29 about a mile before you hit 70.
  • I thank you all for the input, maps and computers are good but real experience is better.

If you come from Delmarva over the bay bridge (past Annapolis), you can take Rt. 50 over the bay bridge and get on I97 North. Then get on Rt. 32 and take it all the way to I70.

The "I97 and Route 32" route lets me avoid both the Baltimore and Washington, DC beltways. It is a nice way to sneak between the two cities. Don't tell too many people though - keep it our little secret.

Route 32 is limited access most of the way to I70, but not all the way. The last few miles have a few crossroads but not a big deal.

I always take that route when heading to I70 West with my 5th wheel. Much less traffic, stress and congestion than the beltways.

    Safe travels.

I also live close by and my preferred route is I-97 to RT 100 to RT 29 north to I-70. As RT32 leaves Clarksville it is two lanes so it's just a preference thing for me, as there are fewer issues for me on this route.

Both will work - just take your choice,
  • We frequently use eb145's route in reverse to get to the Eastern Shore from Hagerstown. Sometimes, the traffic on the 8 mile stretch of 2 lane on 32 runs as fast as the 4 lane. If you go a little farther north on I97 you could take MD100 to Us29 to I70. It's all 4 lane. Six of one and half a dozen of the other.

Yes - we go on it a few times a year between I-70 and the Balto-Wash Parkway. No problems at all pulling our trailer or not.

  • I've takenI270 to I695 toI70 a few times, like any city route it can become a parking lot or smooth riding. Always looking for the next way of getting there.
  • Not sure where on the DEMARVA that you are coming from but the only ways to get W of Baltimore are US13 S to I64, US50 or US13 N to I95.

I travel between PA/DE and VA in my RV a lot. I usually take I695 counter clockwise around Baltimore from I95 to get to I70 west to avoid the DC beltway.

Though it looks like US50->I97->MD32->I70 looks like it would work for you.
