Bypassing Atlanta

Headed to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. For the first time I find I can't read the atlas.
Just had cataract surgery.
We would like very much to avoid Atlanta, the choke point of traffic north and south.
To get to I20 the GPs both of them want to route you to Atlanta.
We are headed from Mid Tn and it looks like 75 south.
Wouldn't hurt my feelings if we could avoid Ga altogether.
We don't relish narrow mountain roads though.
Anyway to shortcut from I75, Dalton Ga, east or south east on good road for Mh and toad to 20 or alternate route with possible overnight stops?
Trying to avoid mad mad Atlanta area, of about 100mi circle safely.
  • Go straight through it is actually easier. We stay in the middle lanes and usually don't have issues unless there is an accident or construction and then it's only a minor delay. If you have a smart phone use the Google Maps app and it will let you know of any delays in your path. We usually hit Atlanta on a Saturday morning or late afternoon. Stay away on week days before 9:00 and after 3:00.
  • I had the same dilemma going through Houston. Went through during the week and it was like going through Los Angeles. Went through on the weekend and it was smooth sailing. Try Atlanta during the weekend.
  • My preferred route south on I-75 is just go straight thru. Time of day may make a difference. Then too, a accident can really foul things up. In all my years going south, I still prefer staying on I-75.
Just stay out of the right lane. You may get caught in an exit lane and it will be hard to merge left.
  • If you avoid typical rush hour times it really won't be worth going around.
  • Not sure where you are. But how hard would it be for you to run I-40 to Ashville, to I-26? Then on to Columbia, and then 20 to Florence, to 501 into Myrtle.?
