CA SR 44 or 36 from I-5 ???

We plan to head over to Susanville, CA from the Redding, CA area. We've never been on either SR 44 or 36 and would appreciate any info you folks could provide as to road conditions etc.

  • We just drove 44 eastward last week. Unfortunately in the car! A great road and in very good condition. You will have no trouble.
  • Weather good, roads good. I prefer 44, DW prefers 36. So we usually go 36, as I am consistently outvoted 1 to 1.

X2! 44 runs into 36 about 5 miles from Susanville anyways. 44 is a very good road.

44 looks more like a direct route and less time. To take 36 you would have to drive down to Red Bluff and then up.

  • Most surely take 44. 36 is a lot windier than 44. I have driven both and with my MH, there is no contest at all. Take 44, it is a much easier drive, and besides, you travel around the base of Mt. Lassen with great views.
