Calgary C train light rail

We are heading to Alberta this summer and we have tickets for the Calgary Stampede. We will be staying at Bows Riveredge RV Park. My question is that I heard it is easier to take the C Train into the Stampede since parking can be tough. How and where do we get to the Train? Do we just park there at the station? What is the approximate cost?
Thanks for any help !

Janet

  • Thanks all. We will be 4 adults and we don't want to even think about driving into Calgary. We will venture to the CTrain. Is Crowfoot Station easier to get a parking spot or Tuscany? Is there a certain time of day that is easier to get a parking space? We have tickets for Wed July 13th.

Thanks again. We are just making sure we have all our ducks in a row ;)

  • C-Train is the way to go. Don't take your car anywhere near the Stampede. Parking is very expensive in private lots and it is pure misery to try and get out of the area.

If you decide against the C Train and don't mind a fifteen minute walk you can drive just East of the Stampede grounds into the community of Inglewood. (9th Ave area) On residential streets parking is free and easy to find. It is a safe area to walk, even at night.

Cowboy hats and big belt buckles are mandatory during the Stampede so make sure you are properly equipped. It is a fun time in a great city.
  • Raceman is correct. From Cochrane - go to the Tuscany LRT station and park there. It is a direct train to the Stampede grounds. Finding parking at the LRT stations can be a bit difficult at times so ensure you allow for that. Also, Tuscany is the last station and the ones at the end tend to have more demand for parking. If you can't park there, continue on Crowchild trail and stop at Crowfoot Station, Dalhousie Station, or Brentwood Station. All of these are on Crowchild trail, which is the main route to downtown and the Stampede grounds.
  • Hi Janet,

Yes, taking the C-Train to the Stampede grounds is likely your best bet as what you have been told is true: parking leaves much to be desired :(

Since you're coming in from the Cochrane area, you would drive to Calgary on Highway 1A. Watch for the signs directing you to the Tuscany C-Train station. The Park and Ride area is the name for the parking lots at the C-Train stations. Many parking spots at the Tuscany C-Train station are free, but there are some paid/reserved spots, so don't park in those as you may be ticketed and/or towed.

Adult fares on Calgary Transit are $3.15 CDN per adult. That ticket is good for use on C-Train (light rail transit, aka LRT) as well as the bus system. The ticket is valid for 90 minutes, and you can use it to make as many trips and in whatever direction you like.

If you have a few adults in your party, or if you plan on making a few trips on Calgary Transit, you may wish to purchase a booklet of 10 tickets. There is no cash savings, but it's more convenient than having to buy tickets each time you board.

Last year (2015), they had special day passes specifically during Stampede at a cost of $6.50 per adult ($4.50 per youth). These passes make good financial sense if you're making more than 2 trips per day. Not sure if they will have those passes again this year or not.

Youth from 6 to 17 years are $2.10 per ticket, and children under 6 are free.

It will take you between 25 and 35 minutes on the train to get from Tuscany to Stampede.

The nice thing is that there is a C-Train station right at the Stampede grounds. I do not know if they will do it again this year as they have not made any formal announcements, but last year (2015), the C-Train ran 24 hours per day for the entire Stampede. Granted, between 12:45 am and 5:00 am, it only ran every 30 minutes, but it's still better than not at all :)

Hope you enjoy our city and the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth!
  • My kids live in Cochrane and a couple of times we have stayed at the BRE campground there was a shuttle bus right from the campground to the Stampede. Now I don't know if it was a charter that a group from the vamgoind had set up or if the Vampground it's self set something up, but I have seen the busses do I g and going a couple of times while the stampede was on right from the vampgound.
As other have said a phone call would clear it up for ya.
    Soup.

    Google is your friend

Being an ex-native of Calgary I clicked on that link to see how to get from Cochrane to the Stampede. That site is not useful!!
Your best bet is to call the friendly folks st the Bow Rivers Edge (have stayed there several times) and ask them. I do know that you can drive from Cochrane to the farthest west stop of the light rail system (parking there.) and ride that system to the Stampede.
Enjoy me old home - country.
