- LitchExplorerAs long as it is not in a storm cycle and snowing hard. Road is regularly cleared as it is a major North-South route.
- donn0128Explorer IIDepends on the weather. 395 in CA and NV is usually fine. For Oregon look on tripcheck.com for the latest traffic cams. BTW 395/31 from Lakeview to LaPine is a very interesting drive. At least I think so.
- pauljExplorer IIThe highest passes are north of Bishop. Mamouth Mtn is, for example, a major ski area. There's also good climb out of Mono Lake. North of Reno is stays around 5000 ft, without major climbs. Lakeview bills itself as one of the highest towns in Oregon. It's also a relatively dry side of the mountains.
- LwiddisExplorer III love US Hwy 395! Many USFS and BLM campgrounds will be closed but Tuttle Creek BLM near Lone Pine will be open with a dump and water and Holiday USFS near Tom’s Place will also be open but isn’t always clear of snow - dump and water usually closed. Most of Inyo County’s CGs will be open too. Shooting for remake of Gunga Din in Alabama Hills doesn’t start until March, I hear.
- profdant139Explorer IIIf you have never taken that road in the winter, do it (unless it is blizzarding). Incredibly beautiful. Take your time -- stop in Bishop, and Mammoth, and Lee Vining. If you are into snow-shoeing (and who isn't??), there is an infinite amount of great terrain to explore.
The picture in my signature was taken just north of Lee Vining in the fall. In the winter, it is even better. - Executive45Explorer IIIBe sure to get reservations since a lot of the CGs aren't open yet....Dennis
- LaurenExplorerWe love the 395 and done it several times -- as said, be alert to weather an where to stay,
- olympicmanExplorerOriginal Poster here,
Thanks all for the information and I will start checking on campground reservations soon. - F-TROUPExplorerBoulder Creek RV Park in Lone Pine would be a nice stop. Lone Pine to Bishop only dry camping campgrounds in between. Mammouth Lake will have the only rv park open, then I think Bridgeport is the next rv park. Not much that time of year. Topaz Lake RV Park Nevada will be next from Bridgeport, pack your long john's.
