California Coast Drive

I am looking at driving north from LA to Seattle following the coast road in June of 2014. I am in no hurry and I normally drive from about 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Can I get ideas on where to stop for the night and places to visit along the way. I am not planning on stopping in San Francisco at this time. My first stop would be about 100 mile north of LA.

Thanks for any of your thoughts.

  • I would drive on Hwy 101 from LA to Santa Barbara and continue up Hwy 101 to Morrow Bay where I would continue on Hwy 1 to Monterey and then back to Hwy 101 and continue on Hwy 101 up to Newport, Oregon, and then head east to I-5 and continue north to Seattle.

This is the most scenic route without a lot of time on very slow sections of highway other than the stretch up Hwy 1 from Morro Bay to Monterey, but the Big Sur coast is one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the world and not to be missed. You can go into the wine country around San Luis Obispo and east of Cambria and have a great experience without the crowds of the Napa/Sonoma area.

A book I highly recommend is California Camping by Tom Steinstra. It covers all of California and is organized by geographic area and unlike Woodalls you do not need to know the nearest town's name to find RV parks and campgrounds. Tom's book provides a great deal of up to date information on campground facilities and a scenic rating for camping areas and what is around to see and do.

I recommend the small towns like Cayucos and Cambria over the bigger cities like Santa Barbara and Monterey for places to stay and to explore. There are few nice RV parks around Monterey but a nice city owned and operated RV park in Watsonville that is less than a mile off Hwy 1 at Pinto Lake. There may be the option of staying in Monterey at the couty fairgrounds which are in town and would be quiter than the ones along Hwy 1.
  • A good first stop would be Flying Flags RV Resort in Buellton and then head over to Solvang for sightseeing/shopping/food

Or you can head towards the ocean on a winding two lane road and stay at Jalama State Beach (Good Hamburgers at the Snack Shop)... usually lots of Kite Surfers to watch

Drive on Pismo Beach for kicks.

    Morro Rock (plus good campground)

San Simeon and Hearst Castle tour

Big Sur lots of scenic hikes and beaches

    Carmel 17 mile drive

Monterey Bay (Aquarium & Cannery Row)

Ft Bragg Redwoods and the Skunk Train ride over to Willits

Redwoods- be sure to stop at all of the tourist traps....some are fun and interesting

Theres a couple of great campgrounds on the ocean at Wages Creek north of Ft Bragg.

    Lumber operations near Crescent City
  • From SF I would head over to Bodega Bay then stay on Hwy 1 until it connects to 101 at leggett. If you are driving a big rig turn right at Fort Bragg and head to 101. Follow 101 all the way up the OR coast. Newport and Cannon Beach are some of my favorites. The head over the Bridge at Astoria and up through Aberdeen to Olympia.
